Location Discussion

When going to location we were faced with awful news! We thought we had the ideal place to shoot and base our film, but when we arrived to start shooting on the first day, we discovered construction work had taken place and there was no longer any access to our site.  We all got together as a group and discussed our tactics.
In the end we decided that we would have to find somewhere new and we set out to make sure this location was better!

We shortlisted to 2 places, an abandoned house in Hutton and a derlict house in Brentwood. We checked out both and decided the Hutton location had alot more benefits.

So... then we began filming!

Characters

Within our thriller we need to make sure that the victims are isolated so that they seem more vunerable this is why we are only having two victims for this film. As a result we will have four characters that will be playing the “Bad Guy’s” This for the viewer means that the victims will seem outnumbered and also unable to defeat these “Bad Guy’s” The victims for our film will be Rachael Tonkinson and Anisha Bains. Rachael will play the “weaker” victim due to her having blonde hair along with blue eyes which may foresee as her more innocent. And due to Anisha being taller and more board it will give the impression that she might be able to stick up for herself.  As all the “Bad Guy’s” will be masked but they will be all be of a large size so that they seem more daunting for the viewer and as they will be wearing mask’s it will be as they are “Inhuman.”

Enigma's

What Is A Enigma?
An enigma is like a mystery, it is something that baffles the audience's understanding and of which, cannot be explained... The audience will be shown something which they wont yet understand but will later on.
WHY ARE THEY USED?
They are used to entertain the auidence, an enigma will become clear later or at the end of a scene or film, the audience wont know what something is or why its there until later on.  An enigma intrests the audience because it influences them to carry on watching because it draws them in.
EXAMPLE!

This photo can be seen as an enigma because it doesnt explain why you have to keep out.
In a film if this were to be positioned in a scence or if there was a shot of it, the audience would want to know more, they want to discover the mystery themselves by understanding why there is a keep out sign.

Location Evaluation

Today our group visited the location of where we plan to film our thriller; all along we have wanted our piece to be under the sub genre of a “horror thriller”.  We want to create a sense of fear for the audience; we will do this by using enigmas (an important convention of a thriller movie). The use of enigmas will create tension and build up to what would happen in the rest of the movie.

Our location is set in “Highwood Hospital” in Brentwood; it has a lot of abandoned Victorian buildings which are run down and derelict with boarded up windows.

We thought this would immediately create a sense of fear for the viewers, because it is a derelict area meaning nobody is around, and it is a creepy place because it has an old fashioned vibe.

When visiting then location, we found things we didn’t expect but which we are glad are there because they will add greatly to the final result of the film.

The smashed window is an enigma because it causes the viewers to question why and how it got smashed.

We found a a room which had old components of a toilet, it had a very creepy feel to it.

Our main find was a basement at the back of one of the buildings, it had two chairs already inside and had an abandoned kind of feel, the walls were crumbling, there were pipes on the floor and leaves covered the door.

We would like to base most of the film in here because it was so ideal for our initial idea.

Other places involved an ally way with barbed wire on the top.

As a group we are extremely happy with what we found today, and now feel like our idea has developed into something better and the location will give our film exactly the right setting of a horror thriller.
We are also now aware of some of the dangers we will now face, so we will add more to the health and safety hazards table.
